Notes

  • 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  • In terms of standard gigabytes, 1GiB ≈ 1.074GB and refers to the actual formatted capacity if shown under Mac OS 10.5 or earlier and Microsoft Windows OS.
  • The Aura Pro X2 is a high performance PCIe 3.1 x4 NVMe SSD capable of performing in excess of 3000MB/s in Macs with PCIe3.0 x4 SSD slot. Performance can vary depending on many factors, including the Mac model and its drive bus specifications. Please check the compatibility section and the detailed specs for your Mac model's drive bus specifications.
  • Sequential read/write (max) performance numbers are based on testing with AJA System Test (4K-Full resolution, 64GB file size, 16bit RGBA codec, file per frame test) on a Mid 2015 MacBook Pro (MacBookPro11,4).
  • Not compatible with Apple Boot Camp on MacBookPro11,1 or MacBookAir6,1 or MacBookAir6,2.
  • When upgrading from an AHCI SSD used in some older Mac models (2013-2014), you may observe a slight increase in boot times. Read the Knowledge Base article to learn more.

Rating: 5/5 2x writing speed of OEM November 11, 2020 I upgraded Macbook Pro 13" Early 2015 last night.

Just for the SDD itself, I'd give a 4 star - it works. It's faster than the OEM stick, but not by a huge margin. I was clocking at ~550 Mbps WRITE and ~1000 Mbps READ speed on OEM stick. After the upgrade though, it's writing at ~1200 Mbps WRITE and ~1500 Mbps READ. So, it's definitely an improvement but not drastic.

I want to, however, give an extra star for the customer service. I had an issue migrating the data. I'm supposed to start the computer using holding CMD-OPT-R and not CMD-R. I honestly didn't know the different but the customer service explained the technical details (which I honestly didn't understand 50%) and the set up work like a charm.

Hopefully this SDD won't crap out on me and last at least 5 years.

Rating: 5/5 Product Exactly as Announced September 28, 2020 After waiting for 2 days my new SSD came and after following the clear set of instructions found in the MacSales website I was able to install it successfully. It's been a couple of weeks using this new SSD and my computer processing speeds have slightly improved. However, the most noticeable improvements are the writing speed and how quick I can access all my files.

Just an amazing product!

Rating: 5/5 Should have purchased sooner September 7, 2020 My only regret is that I waited to upgrade as long as I did. This product was easy to install and it allowed me to use my mac in ways I could not before. Now I can take advantage of a full music library local to my mac and that has allowed me to really curate my collection. In the past, I tried to 'make do' by using external storage and such but it is just no comparison. Loving the new elbow room.

Rating: 5/5 Much Faster September 7, 2020 I purchased a used 2014 Mac Mini 2.8 Ghz computer with a 1 TB Apple Fusion drive.

The computer ran much slower than I had expected, especially after adding the files from my previous Mac Mini. It was borderline usable and there were big delays in opening programs.

So, I bought the Aura Pro X2 PCIe SSD and installed it. Since my computer had the Fusion drive, it already had the PCIe socket installed. All I did was remove the Fusion SSD (no longer needed) and replace it with the Aura X2 SSD. Installation took only a few minutes and was not difficult, . I would have liked to have also replaced the 1TB rotating hard drive, but that would have been a lot more work.

I had split the Fusion SSD from the 1TB drive before I did the Aura X2 install. There is a firmware command for this which can be found online. Use of the Terminal window is required. To be honest, I'm not sure this was entirely necessary. But it was recommended so I did it.

I then began the slow process of doing a fresh install of Apple Mojave OS and transferring my files and programs. For some reason, the Migration Assistant did not work that well, so I wound up manually reinstalling most of my applications and then manually transferring my stored files from the old computer to the new. When the drives are split, you will see separate icons for the old 1TB rotating hard drive and the new Aura X2 SSD. For maximum speed, I loaded all files onto the Aura.

After some time spent tweaking my system (I updated some of my perhiphials and cables) the new computer now works well. It has only 8GB of RAM memory but still is plenty quick enough for my day to day use. It also runs Windows 10 under VM Ware Fusion. Windows is by no means lightening quick, but it is fast enough to watch You Tube videos and run various software that I occasionally need on that platform.

This is an especially good upgrade for 2014 Mac Mini owners that want to get a little more life out of their computers.

Rating: 4/5 Faster but not really 100% compatible August 21, 2020 This drive is incredibly fast when compared to the original SSD that came with my 2013 MacBook Air. BlackMagic Disk Speed Test shows greater than 4X the original. I chose this one, at a higher price than others, because it stated on the page that there were no hacks required and 100% compatible.

After installation, I thought perhaps I had done something wrong because my Mac crashed and rebooted every time I opened the lid. Turns out there is FAQ on macsales dated from a few years back that states this is a known problem on some Macs. [seems to me that the very existence of this FAQ should invalidate the claim of 100% compatibility.]

The workaround offered requires the deep sleep option of standby to be disabled. To get the work around to work, I had to reset SMC and NVRAM/PRAM and then reapply the workaround.

Since my Mac can't deep sleep, it will use more battery while sleeping (and sleep for a shorter time) which will lead to a shorter battery life. I did just replace the battery on my 7 year old MacBook Air, so the battery may outlast the life of my MacBook Air.

Rating: 4/5 Pretty awesome August 21, 2020 I replaced my failed original 512 GB SSD on a 2013 Apple MacBook Air in July with this product. The Aura Pro was easy to install and worked right away. It nearly doubled the memory and presented no problems in terms of being recognized. I transferred about 500GB of material from a backup drive. The Aura even allowed me to update to Catalina, which I had not been able to do with the old drive (before it crashed). The only new problem I have had was a difficulty in waking up the SSD each day after putting it to sleep. The screen remained black, although the cursor was visible and working. I had to force quit the computer and turn it on again. I decided it was a problem with an AntiSleep app (Z), so I uninstalled it. That helped. The Aura has been ready to go each morning. BUT, it now reports a "sleep wake failure", requiring all the programs to restart each day. Possibly the problem is not related to the Aura Pro, but its installation is the only new thing, albeit a big change, that my computer has experienced in some time.

Rating: 5/5 Wonderful upgrade June 22, 2020 I have a 2015 MacBook Pro with Retina display. Unfortunately, I got the cheapest model which came with only 128 GB of storage. This made some tasks a real pain and I often relied on external storage. I became interested in getting more storage, but it seemed far too expensive to be worth it. Then I find out about this OWC drive. 1 TB of fast storage at a really good price. With my files backed up, I opened up my MacBook and made the switch myself, following the video tutorials. macOS was installed onto the new drive without any problems. I've been using this new drive for almost a month and my Mac is working great, and I no longer have to worry about running out of space for all the things I want to do. I'm even using BootCamp to run Windows 10 too. This is an excellent upgrade for those who need more space on their Mac.

Rating: 5/5 It works! March 26, 2020 I’m glad I was able to upgrade my SSD all on my own. Now, my backup was on an older external drive and kept disconnecting during restore. So I had to buy the enclosure separately, so it ended up costing me about $10 more than if I bundled them.

But I got it to work! So my recommendation is just go ahead and get the enclosure.

Rating: 4/5 Good enough for its money October 29, 2019 I wasnt fully satisfied, because on my MakbookPro Late2013 this disk didnt show anything even close to 2400/3200 MB/s. At my system the numbers are 2 times less 1200/1500 MB/s. I'am not sure is it because of my old laptop, or its wrong numbers in Aura ProX2 specification. Anyway, I think seller should describe this in specs.

Response from MacSales.com, Call Center October 29, 2019 The speed of the Aura Pro X2 will depend on the internal connection available in the computer. While the drive is capable of faster speeds, the computer and connection available must also support those speeds. Feel free to contact us with any questions before purchasing.

Rating: 1/5 Not As Claimed / Same Read Rates / Faster Writes May 6, 2019 This drive writes a lot faster, for sure, but the read rate is essentially the same as the Original Apple 1TB SSD. The proof is in the performance testing. See photos. If you're looking for more space with 2TB and faster writes, then this is a good fit. It certainly does not live up to the hype of "Thrilling speeds up to 3282MB/s read and 2488MB/s write." I'd be very interested to know what benchmark software OWC used to attain these performance claims.

Response from MacSales.com, Call Center May 7, 2019 Hello. I do apologize about any confusion regarding the advertised speeds. While this drive is capable of speeds up to the 3200MB/s read and 2400MB/s write, that will be dependent on the host computer. The majority of Apple computers that the Pro X2 is compatible with were utilizing a 2 lane PCIe connection which will lower the speed significantly. We are working on clarifying the real-world speeds that you should be seeing with each model computer. Currently, the 2015 MacBook Pro is the only model we have seen capable of reaching the full potential of the Aura Pro X2.
