OWC Data Doubler Adds Up to 3.0TB of Hard Drive and/or SSD-Flash Storage to Apple MacBook and MacBook Pro

Other World Computing announced today the availability of new OWC Data Doubler DIY Bundles, available for up to 3.0TB of internal, RAID-able drive capacity for Apple MacBook and MacBook Pro models. The OWC Data Doubler gives MacBook/MacBook Pro owners the flexibility to configure their computer’s internal drive array to suit their needs: greater overall storage for up to 3.0 TB total capacity; greater data integrity by creating an internal back-up drive; or greater performance by creating a Striped RAID in Disk Utility.

This straight-forward, easy to follow DIY kit lets anybody take their existing MacBook or MacBook Pro, and install more and/or faster storage than factory stock. The Data Doubler mounting solution comes complete with the Data Doubler internal drive mount, a detailed step-by-step Mac notebook model-specific installation guide, and a five-piece toolkit. Special Bundles, that also include up to two drives and up to 3.0TB of capacity, are also available.

The OWC Data Doubler is available for Apple MacBook and MacBook Pro models, which include the following:

  • Apple MacBook 13″ 2008 to 2010
  • Apple MacBook Pro 13″ models 2009 and later (excluding 13” w/Retina)
  • Apple MacBook Pro 15″ models 2008 and later (excluding 15” w/Retina)
  • Apple MacBook Pro 17″ models 2009 and later

Here’s a sample of what thousands of OWC Data Doubler users have said:

“I’ve never found an adapter like the OWC Data Doubler that adds another hard drive to a laptop before. OWC has it going on! The OWC Data Doubler is awesome — easy to install with instructions and tools — a great product, and the only one on the market!” Robin D. – Union City, CA

“First of all, if you are thinking of doing a swap to an SSD… stop thinking and do it. The performance gains are awesome. I’ve used other converters as well, but the OWC kit is a step above. More care went into the engineering and the fit in the computer and for the drive are more precise. Plus having the right tools included is great.” Brock Rumer – Chicago, IL

Let nothing go to waste:

After purchasing a new OWC Data Doubler DIY Kit, the internal “SuperDrive” can be re-purposed as an external optical drive with the OWC SuperSlim USB 2.0 enclosure, available at a discounted price of $19.00 when purchased with Data Doubler. This lightweight, USB 2.0 bus-powered enclosure is the ideal solution for MacBook and MacBook Pro owners installing an OWC Data Doubler DIY Kit. At the same time, while enjoying up to an additional capacity in the re-purposed optical drive bay, users can install the replaced Apple SuperDrive into the OWC SuperSlim enclosure to create a fully bootable, external Plug and Play CD and DVD burning/playing solution.

Our Data Doubler Kits enable anyone to add new levels of storage capacity, performance and reliability that are simply unavailable from factory models,” said Larry O’Connor, founder and CEO of Other World Computing. “By adding a second hard drive and replacing your current internal drive you can now have up to 3.0TB (up to 3X Factory Option) of storage capacity for your MacBook or MacBook Pro.”

  • Hello. I have a MacBook Pro mid 2012. I buy an SSD 240Gb for Sierra and SSD 1Tb for documents. When I install in the superdrive caddy, I can see the hard drive and read but not write (I format using USB because Disk Utility can’t). I try the 1Tb SSD in another computer and its working fine. If I install this SSD like Sierra is working too. What I can do? Thank you!

    • PD: in my last upgrade, I install one SSD 120Gb for Sierra (SATA III) and HDD 1Tb for Documents (SATA II) and works fine.
Now booth are SSD SATA III

      • Thank you for your question! Testing has demonstrated that Apple factory hardware does not reliably support a 6G (6Gb/s) Solid State Drive or Hard Disk Drive in the optical bay of 2011 and 2012 MacBook Pros (Model ID 8,1; 8,2; 8,3; 9,1; 9,2).

We would recommend getting a SATA II (3G) drive for your 2012 MacBook Pro.

  • I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2011) that I was hoping to use my 1.5TB HGST Travelstar drive in the cd bay but, the data doubler only seems to be recognizing the apple 750gb in the optical bay. I tried the same drive & data doubler in my bothers 2012 MacBook Pro & it worked with out a hitch with my 1.5TB HGST Travelstar & his 2TB (Samsung Seagate Momentus SpinPoint ST2000LM003) is there a capacity limit in the Late 2011’s?

  • Can I configure the 750 GB, 7200 rpm HD and my SSD (using Data Doubler) in my late 2011 MBP 17″ into a fusion drive?

  • I want to instal an SSD in the normal hard drive bay of my late 2011 MBP 17″ using the Data Doubler and the OWC Mercury 6G and reposition the current 750 GB, 7200 rpm HD into the Data Doubler in the optical bay, as suggested in the OWC instructions. Will the performance of the hard drive suffer from a connection to a 3G bus in the optical bay rather than the 6G bus in the regular bay?

    • Apple used 3G hard drives in the 2011 MBPs so it will not encounter any issues being installed in the optical drive bay.

  • I have a 13″ Late 2012 Macbook Pro Retina, I noticed after removing the bottom of the case that the SSD sits inside a small chassis that is removable. Is OWC thinking of making some form of data doubler for that as well? there is more than enough space to house a second SSD chip next to the first one. Or is there already something like that available?

  • What are the advantages of the OWC data doubler over the Opti-Bay or the various driver adapters that can be found on Amazon and eBay for much less money?

    • The Data Doubler is built from solid anodized aluminum, making it much sturdier (and, dare I say, is a much higher quality) than the sheet metal units that can be found elsewhere online. But don’t just take my word for it – read through a few of the customer reviews on the product. You’ll find some even went the cheap route first and came back for the quality.
