Other World Computing announced today that it has upgraded the OWC Mercury Pro External Blu-ray Optical Drive to professional grade 16X BD-R write speeds, 128GB BDXL compatibility, and high-speed USB 3.0 connectivity.
Read and Write Double, Triple, Quad Layer BD-R Discs
In addition to single and double layer BD-R discs, the Mercury Pro External offers expanded support for up to 100GB of data on triple layer BDXL-R/BDXL RE discs and up to 128GB on quad layer BDXL-R discs. For comparison, 128GBs of data on a single quad layer BDXL disc is the equivalent of 27 standard DVDs or five single layer Blu-ray discs.
“Optical drives are still a vital component of any desktop or mobile computer for affordable data backup and archiving,” said Larry O’Connor, Founder and CEO, Other World Computing. “And the Mercury Pro External offers best-in-class speed, features, and compatibility for all users.”
Fast and Flexible
The USB 3.0, FireWire 800, and FireWire 400 multi-interface data connection options provide the throughput to support fast 16X write speeds. From 640MB CD-Rs to 128GB BDXL media, the Mercury Pro External Blu-ray optical drive provides the right speed and data capacities for every size project.

They havent invented the 128gb disc for the market yet how are they going to realase it. If they do probably next year!
And where do you buy the fictitious/nonexistant “up to 128GB on quad layer BDXL-R discs” ? I see everything has 100GB, but not 128GB.
We’ve been watching for them to come to market as well. So far, we haven’t seen availability on the quad-layer BDXL-R discs.
We do carry the triple-layer 100GB discs. However, with the almost $40 average price per disk currently for the triple-layer media, I suspect that the assuredly higher cost for the quads has been keeping them from widespread availability.
Seems the M-DISC 25GB disks should be ready in less than 2 weeks

Sure is. That’s why the Blu-Ray media will be added to our offerings soon.
That’s great to hear. Thanks! Just ordered one. Does it support the MDisc DVDs as well?
Kevin
Yes, we have the M-Disc DVD media available currently and the Blu-Ray media will be added to our offerings soon.
Oops, I see on the “more info” page that M-Disc is supported. It appears this is for DVD only, however is that correct? Or does it support writing to Blu-Ray M-Disc, too?
Thanks.
Kevin
The optical drive mechanism will indeed support M-Disc Blu-ray media once it becomes available.
Does it support either (or both)
M-Disc DVDs
and/or
M-Disc Blu-Ray discs?
Thanks!
Kevin
