App Camp for Girls is an amazing non-profit organization with the goal of teaching 8th or 9th grade girls how to design and code apps. The group has just released its first iPhone app on the iOS App Store, the US$0.99 App Camp Quiz Compendium.
Created by teams attending App Camp for Girls, this fun app brings together 15 separate “personality quizzes” that cover the range from the serious — “In which career would you excel?” — to the silly — “What kind of penguin are you?”.
These quizzes were put together by teams that brainstormed ideas, designed icons and the user interface, and then built the quizzes in Xcode. The teams also made their own marketing swag, then pitched their quiz app to a panel of women investors and entrepreneurs. The resulting quizzes ended up in this app, which was then run through the App Store publishing process. The proceeds from the app will benefit App Camp for Girls.
You can help support the group by purchasing the app, and if your favorite middle-school-aged girl is interested in becoming an app developer, be sure to have her apply to attend a camp. Spots are still open at the camps in Vancouver, BC (July 6-10) and Seattle, WA (July 13-17).
