  • Is it possible to build a USB 3.1 Type C Generation 2 (10Gbps) port splitter or multiplier (or hub-dock) with many (say, 10, for instance) of such ports, as there are for USB 3.0 (5 Gbps)? That would be great!

    • Great question, Max. I passed this by someone in Product Development here at OWC. Here is what they had to say:

I don’t think there are USB-C 10Gbps hub chipsets yet. Generally speaking, there are only four-port USB hub chipsets. What this means is that any USB hub that offers more than four ports is really multiple USB hub chipsets chained together. It would have to be a self-powered hub to offer more than four USB ports, so it would not be bus-powered like the Travel Dock.

      • Thanks. Whatever the implementation (even without being bus-powered), it would be great if you could release USB 3.1 Type C Generation 2 (10Gbps) port splitters or multipliers. And the same for Thunderbolt 3.

Please, note that although it would be a great bonus, it is not strictly necessary that all connected devices work at the same time. For instance, you may have four external portable SSD connected all the time, but use manual switches to actually connect any of them (one or several) at any time.

As far as I know, there are not such products in the market, Not even 1-to-2 port splitters for them, and not even male-to-female cables or port protectors for Thunderbolt 3 (to protect Mac port when you plug & unplug many times). You will sell many of such devices for sure!
