Next Generation Thunderbolt Unveiled At NAB; OWC Shows Off Jupiter

There was no shortage of action on day one of the 2013 edition of the NAB Show in Las Vegas.

Yesterday, Intel unveiled the next generation of its Thunderbolt interface that will produce throughput of 20Gbps in each direction. For reference, that’s twice as fast as the 10Gbps of the current generation.

Code-named “Falcon Ridge”, the new generation of Thunderbolt will enable simultaneous 4K video file transfer and display. According to Intel, the new generation of Thunderbolt will be backward-compatible with the current generation Thunderbolt cables and connectors.

Other World Computing founder and CEO Larry O’Connor had this to say about Intel’s announcement:

We have an exciting Thunderbolt line up coming out in 2013 and with respect to the 2014 Falcon Ridge, we are excited about the announcement and look forward to collaborating with Intel on new Thunderbolt products,” O’Connor said.

Production of the next generation of Thunderbolt is expected to ramp up in 2014.

And while Intel was announcing the exciting future of Thunderbolt, Team OWC was busy showing off speeds you can get right now with the current generation interface when teamed with OWC Jupiter.

In unofficial testing directly on the NAB exhibit hall floor, the pre-production 8-bay Jupiter Expander Tower has proved impressive when equipped with 8 x 4TB SAS 2.0 6Gb/s 7200RPM hard drives, a Jupiter HBA in a RAID 0 configuration inside OWC’s Helios PCIe Thunderbolt expansion chassis connected via Thunderbolt to a 15″ MacBook Pro with Retina display. With this setup, data throughput clocked in at 900MB/s with QuickBench.

Of course, that is just scratching the surface of what Jupiter can really do! As well as the possibilities the Helios expansion chassis can offer. So, if you’re at the NAB show, stop by our booth SL 14811 and check out this Thunderbolt based solution.

  • When should we expect both 2 Thunderbolt ports & USB 3 to both Mercury Elite Pro and Mercury Elite Pro mini.

    • I am sorry, but we can’t really speak as to the timeframes of future products here on the OWC Blog.

  • Meanwhile, OWC has been promising more Thunderbolt products for two years. Where are the TB RAID arrays, or even a drive dock?

(And USB-3 doesn’t count – there are millions of Macs with TB ports but only have USB-2.)
