As mentioned in my post from Friday, we received stock of Hitachi’s new 2.0TB 7200RPM DeskStar 7K2000 Serial ATA Hard Drive. By popular demand, we tested the three drives mentioned in that post internally in a Mac Pro to show just how much of a difference rotational speed can make when not limited to the ever-popular FW800 interface.
We benchmarked all three of these drives using the QuickBench TM 4.0 Extended Test. This test measures the drive’s ability to sustain large amounts of data (measuring between 20MB and 100MB) transferred to and from your computer. But then measured speeds using two hi-definition tests AJA System Test and BlackMagic Disk Speed Test.
The Contenders:
2.0TB Western Digital RE4 Enterprise Class

Conclusion
The tests speak for themselves…but to save you the time and give you the “Cliff’s Notes”, the Hitachi continues its reign as the 2TB performance champion.
I guess no body is going to say anything about the barracuda being a 5400 RPM while competing agains the 7200rpm Hitachi.
Lets put a v6 engine against v8 and see what will win out. Even though they have the same compression (Cache) doesn’t equal speeds.
Get with it!!!
Just goes to show that like the old speed shop sign:
“There’s no replacement for displacement.”
one can make a similar statement for pure 7200RPM 2TB drives:
“Exact rotation eliminates any speculation.”
