It’s never fun to watch something beautiful be torn apart. Well, sometimes it is, and this is definitely one of those times. Now that we have our hands on the new iMac with Retina 5K display that was announced at Apple’s special event last week, we wanted to share our teardown.
Check out the gallery at the bottom to see what we found.
Some noteworthy observations from the teardown:
- The iMac 5K uses the same SSD found in the Late 2013-current MacBook Pro with Retina display, 2013-current MacBook Air, and 2014 Mac mini.
- The video card is soldered in.
- Boot screen is black screen with a white logo and progress bar.
- Also noteworthy, of course, are the Thunderbolt 2 ports. Which will work great with Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 devices.
- The memory is upgradable, and OWC has memory upgrade kits to help you get the best performance from your new machine.
27-in iMac with Retina 5K display specs:
- 3.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 with 6MB L3 cache (Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz)
- 8GB of memory
- 1TB Fusion Drive
The Retina display settings are as follows:
- Larger text: looks like 1600 x 900
- Middle setting: looks like 2048 x 1152
- Best: looks like 2560 x 1440
- Middle setting: looks like 2880 x 1620
- More Space: looks like 3200 x 1800

This uses the same SSD as the Mac Pro/retina MBP, but how many lanes does it connect with?
The Mac Pro connects with 4 lanes, does this as well?
