One of the aspects of Apple culture that makes it so cool, is the company’s attention to preserving the past and incorporating it into their vision of the future.
Why not put a spaceship next to a pioneer barn amidst an orchard? Imagine what an alien invasion might think when they land? But it’s more than that. It’s a matter of respect, not only for the Earth itself, but the overarching culture of humanity. After all, how will we know where we are going, if we forget where we came from?
Alongside the spaceship-shaped Apple 2 Campus in Silicon Valley will reside a glimpse into America’s past, according to MacRumors via San Jose Mercury News. Relocated from the existing HP campus, the century-old Glendenning Barn was carefully deconstructed and moved, with plans of reassembly once the construction of the new campus is complete.
The structure, which was recognized as a “monument to Silicon Valley’s agricultural past” in 2004, will be reassembled using detailed construction notes under the observation of Donna Austin, president of the Cupertino Historical Society. Apple was careful to salvage additional redwood from an old grove to have on hand in the instance any of the original planks are damaged and need to be replaced.
Apple’s current plans for the barn, include becoming an equipment storage facility, which will be located directly across from the employee fitness center.
