Comment: I enjoyed it immensely, first in 2D and then in iMax 3D. Unbelievable in iMax 3D! Whether a first time watcher or long time fan of the Star Trek universe, it easily enjoyable for all. Fate being fate, I enjoyed some of the clever homage paid to the original series.

Comment: Beam me up! Roller coaster ride of action from the start to the finish. IMAX and 3D were priceless. Must have jumped in my seat a few times. Even shed a tear. I plan on going back for a second time.

Comment: Amazing. I love how the actors really embrace the prior actor’s personalities yet make each character their own. The new storyline, a continuation of Star Trek (2009), is a keep you in your seat action packed thrill ride. I love how Star Trek: Into Darkness also builds off the original Wrath of Kahn. 3D IMAX is the way to see this movie. I can’t wait for this to come out on 3D BluRay! This movie is a must OWN!

Comment: As a stand-alone movie Star Trek: Into Darkness works quite well. Lots of action and special effects. I was actually pleasantly surprised with the latter; the “J.J. Abrams Lens Flare” was considerably less pronounced (to me at least) than the previous movie, and the 3D wasn’t as headache-inducing as others I have seen.
However, taken in the context of the Star Trek Universe (alternate timeline though it may be), there were a number of subtle (an not-so-subtle) references to the original Trek series and films that seemed a bit superfluous and almost a little hokey in places. Character development (and consistency) left a bit to be desired as well; much of the “Senior Staff” were rather underutilized and/or relegated to roles that didn’t really fit. One of the big things I enjoyed with Star Trek: The Original Series was how deep the cast was; they all played a role. This crew seems to be “Kirk, Spock, and those other guys.” The major exception, as far as I’m concerned was John Cho’s brief moment of Sulu bad-assery.
Overall, though, I found the film to be an enjoyable diversion. Not having seen the 2D version, I can’t say whether or not the 3D really adds or detracts from the film as a whole, but it is (with a couple of small exceptions) generally benign. If you don’t see it in the theatre, it’s still worth a spot in the Netflix queue.

Comment: Absolutely brilliant! They’re able to create a new and exciting storyline and still give nod after nod to the ones we all know and love so well. I laughed, cried and gaped in awe; It was a fantastic ride that was made all the better by watching with my OWC Family.

Comment: I never liked Star Trek but this movie was very good. I enjoyed the action scenes and the story line, especially since I didn’t need to know much Star Trek background to follow along.

Comment: 3D was really awesome. There was one part where I jumped and moved thinking that a javelin was going to hit me in the face. Non-stop action that kept me engaged with every moment to the film. Spock is characteristically dry but humorous. I highly recommend this film and the other J.J. Abrams’s installment. How about it…Star Trek 3 in 2016!

Comment: It was great! I really enjoyed the references to the original series and movies. They were obvious enough for fans to catch, but they were worked into the story well enough that newcomers weren’t left scratching their heads. The second installment in the J.J. Abrams reboot continues to be well written and respectful of the original series, while not being afraid to take the franchise in new directions.

Comment: Very cool revision of the Kahn storyline. The visual effects were stunning as expected and seeing it in 3D would be well worth the extra cost.

Comment: I thought some parts (including the end) were rather predictable. That being said, I enjoyed the action and the plot of the movie, and while in some scenes the 3D seemed like they tried too hard to show it off, overall, it was well done.

Comment: An excellent improvement on and continuation of the first movie in the new series with some nostalgic tie-in moments for fans of the original. I enjoyed it immensely and would boldly go see it again.
Have not seen the new one yet. Wanted to see what others thought as I have heard 2 opposing views – one good, one not – so far. My guess is I would line up with Chris on this after reading what you folks thought. I may even agree with Ryan in these comments. I was disappointed to hear that they “reused” Kahn. I was hoping with the “new” universe intact they would go into new stories with PERHAPS a minor mention of past history. That gets a bit problematic for me as with the new timeline some of that stuff would not be in memory – the tribble mention that Ryan spoke of for example.
I also hope that Chris is right and JJ kept those dang lens flares to a minimum. His use in the first one didn’t make sense much of the time. It reminded me of the mindset of a friend of mine when he got his first “fuzz” box – HAD to use the thing on EVERY solo whether it worked or not. That kind of stuff makes me shudder when I think of JJ doing Star Wars – don’t know it that’s true, but it’s what I’ve heard.
Thanks for all of you sharing your thoughts. I think I have a better idea of what to expect now.
It was a good movie. But I first started watching Star Trek in the early 80’s when I was a teenager and the constant references to the previous movies and series where annoying. They were too obvious and slightly insulting. I mean, a tribble? GIve me a break. No reason for the tribble to be in the story. It just served to take you out of the narrative.
blah blah blah
