Women in Tech: What We’re Reading

PrintThrough our Women in Tech series on the OWC Blog, we’ve discussed the lack of diversity in technology industry with women comprising 51 percent of the workforce, yet only 26 percent of tech professionals.

In our own reading on this persisting challenge, we’ve come across some articles offering insight and inspiring tales:

Square Meal of Code
Tech website TechCrunch recently featured an article on Square Code Camp, which is a class that helps young women deal with the challenges of entering the world of coding. Square Code Camp seeks to tackle the problem of getting more women interested in engineering head on. One particularly interesting statistic highlighted in the article is that only 5 percent of U.S. high schools offer AP Computer Science, and as of 2011, just 19 percent of the students who take that class are women. Check out TechCrunch’s article for the stories of several young women seeking to enter tech fields.

Changing the Conversation
Telle Whitney, President and CEO of the Anita Borg Institute, discusses some of the challenges that she faced as a young woman entering the engineering field. Whitney also co-founded the Grace Hopper Celebration, which strives to “connect, inspire, and guide women in computing and organizations that view technology innovation as a strategic imperative.” For more on Whitney’s journey and initiatives, check out her article at
