Your Old Mac Still Has A Future. Here’s How PowerON Helps Get It There

A Mac that no longer meets one person or company’s needs could be exactly what someone else needs to get started. But getting it from a desk or storage closet to its next owner takes more than finding a buyer. What happens to the data? Who checks the condition and makes sure everything works? And how much value is still there?

Those questions are at the heart of PowerON, the IT asset disposition company that joined the OWC family earlier this year. At OWC, maximizing the useful life and capability of all technology is one of our core values. With the addition of PowerON, we’ll be able to further scale our efforts to repurpose existing technology while reducing eWaste.

We recently visited the PowerON facility in Roseville, California, to meet the people helping used technology find its next purpose every day. Watch the video below for a look inside an operation that processes more than 1,000 computers, mobile devices, and other units a week—and sees opportunity where others might see obsolete equipment.

Used Doesn’t Mean Used Up

Because of the advance in chips we’ve seen in the last few years, today’s Apple Silicon Macs are better suited than ever to live on well past an initial owner decides to part ways with it.

A business upgrading its fleet may have perfectly capable Macs sitting unused. Meanwhile, a brand-new MacBook Pro may be out of reach for someone who could put one of those retired machines to work. PowerON helps connect those needs, recovering value for the original owner while preparing a dependable Mac for its next home.

And that’s really the gist behind IT asset disposition, or ITAD. PowerON works with businesses, schools, and individual consumers to evaluate retired electronics and determine their next step. Depending on the equipment and arrangement, that can mean a trade-in, resale with a share of the proceeds returned to the customer, or responsible recycling.

A Second Life Starts With Trust

Before a used Mac can become someone else’s computer, its previous owner’s data has to be addressed. PowerON’s process starts with data destruction.

From there, devices undergo audits and quality checks that help determine whether they need repair or cleaning. Then, functional and cosmetic evaluations determine whether equipment meets PowerON’s standards for resale. Devices that cannot be reused go to downstream recycling vendors, with documentation confirming destruction.

And PowerON’s process is backed by R2v3 certification. All of PowerON’s processes undergo external audits that scrutinize everything from receiving and data erasure through testing, cleaning, and remarketing. The company keeps tracking records that document where a device came from, when its data was destroyed, and how it moved through the facility.

More Useful Years For More Technology

OWC has long helped people get more from the computers they own through upgrades, storage, and connectivity. PowerON extends that mission to the moment an owner is ready to move on, helping useful devices keep working while recovering their remaining value and reducing unnecessary waste.
