Good Technology Deserves a Second Life. OWC Just Got a Lot Better at Making That Happen with Acquisition of PowerON

One of our core missions here at OWC is reducing e-waste. It’s why we offer great trade-in values on used Apple devices at SellYourMac.com and great deals on used Apple devices right here at MacSales.com. Today, we’re proud to announce an acquisition that will allow us to give even more devices a second chance at life.

OWC has acquired PowerON Services, Inc., a company that has spent more than 30 years helping organizations get the most out of the technology they already own and handle it responsibly when it’s time to move on.

When a company, school, or organization needs to retire a batch of computers or devices, it’s rarely as simple as just throwing them away. For starters, these devices often contain sensitive data that needs to be securely wiped. Once that happens, some can be refurbished and resold while others will need to be properly recycled. PowerON manages all of that: collecting old equipment, evaluating what’s still usable, restoring and reselling what can be, and responsibly recycling the rest.

The industry term for this is IT asset disposition, or ITAD, and PowerON is one of the most experienced and certified operators in that space.

It’s a natural fit for OWC. Since 1988, we have operated on the belief that good technology deserves a longer life. It’s why we design storage, memory, and connectivity solutions to extend the usefulness of the devices people already own. And it’s why we build those solutions to last a long time.

Plus, OWC also owns SellYourMac.com, one of the world’s largest buyers and resellers of used Apple computers, iPhones, and iPads. With PowerON joining the OWC family, we can now extend into enterprise, scaling that work significantly while serving corporations, schools, healthcare systems, and other large organizations across the Americas, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.

Founded in 1994 and based in Roseville, California, PowerON holds multiple internationally recognized certifications including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and R2v3 — the gold standard for responsible electronics recycling. The company has made the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies in America seven times and brings more than 100 combined years of leadership experience in ITAD, logistics, data security, and value recovery.

“What excited us about OWC is that they’ve always been at the forefront of extending the usability of technology, which meshes so well with our reuse-first philosophies,” said PowerON founder and CEO Brent Kelley. “They understand that great technology shouldn’t have a short lifespan, customers deserve smarter and more sustainable solutions, and doing the right thing for the environment can absolutely go hand-in-hand with building a strong global business.”

“What Brent and the PowerON team have built is really special because they understand this business isn’t just about recycling hardware. It’s about helping organizations get more value out of the technology they already own, keeping good equipment working longer, protecting data properly, reducing unnecessary waste, and creating smarter lifecycle strategies from beginning to end,” added OWC founder and CEO Larry O’Connor.

Together, OWC, PowerON, and SellYourMac.com form a more complete technology lifecycle ecosystem, helping customers get the most out of technology from the day they deploy it to the day they’re ready to replace it.
