In case anyone had doubts about the ability of Apple’s new phones to attract buyers year after year, Apple informed CNBC that pre-orders for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are “on pace” to break the record set last year on launch weekend sales of 10 million pre-orders.

Pre-orders for the newest iPhones started on time at 12:01 AM PT on Saturday. I personally found the pre-order process to be much easier and faster than in previous years. A lot of this may be due to Apple and the tech media suggesting that orders be made through the Apple Store app, and that customers pre-enter as much information as possible before Saturday morning.

At this point, it appears that there is stronger demand for the iPhone 6s Plus and Rose Gold models, as ship dates have slipped to 2-3 weeks or more in the US. Here’s Apple’s statement about pre-orders:

“Customer response to iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus has been extremely positive and preorders this weekend were very strong around the world. We are on pace to beat last year’s 10 million unit first-weekend record when the new iPhones go on sale September 25.

As many customers noticed, the online demand for iPhone 6s Plus has been exceptionally strong and exceeded our own forecasts for the preorder period. We are working to catch up as quickly as we can, and we will have iPhone 6s Plus as well as iPhone 6s units available at Apple retail stores when they open next Friday.”
