Following years of speculation and months of swirling rumors, Apple today finally took the wraps off of its very first folding iPhone: the iPhone Duo.
Apple Chief Hardware Officer Johny Srouji said the iPhone Duo represents the “most complex and innovative engineering we have ever done.” Let’s take a look at why.
Inspired By iPad
During the announcement, new Apple CEO John Ternus said that Apple worked for years to create a form factor for a folding iPhone that didn’t compromise on build quality and the experience users have come to expect from Apple. He pointed out the tall, square shaped designs used by most other folding phones as being a non-starter since they are awkward to hold when open and are poor at displaying both widescreen and vertical video.
Ternus said Apple turned to the iPad for guidance. The result is a folio or passport-shaped folding phone with a short 5.4-inch outer display that opens up into a wide 7.6-inch inner display. Ternus said using this inner display feels more natural because it fits vertical video, text, and apps just as well as it fits widescreen video and using two apps side by side.
Thin But Durable
Apple says that when opened up, the iPhone Duo is the thinnest iPhone yet, comprised of a Grade 5 titanium frame with Ceramic Shield 2 protecting the front outer display and Ceramic Shield protecting the back of the Duo.
Maybe the most pivotal (pun intended?) part of a folding phone is the hinge and Apple spent a lot of time working to get it right on iPhone Duo. The hinge is comprised from more than 100 components has a variable torque profile that Apple says makes opening and closing the Duo smooth, effortless, and satisfying.
More importantly, Apple says iPhone Duo is also splash-, water-, and dust-resistant thanks to an IP68 rating.
Displays and a Custom Version of iOS 27
One thing you’ll notice when first looking at iPhone Duo’s outer display is that there’s no Dynamic Island. That’s because iPhone Duo uses TouchID for authentication rather than FaceID. Instead, the front display is marked only by a punchout from the single Center Stage camera. This is the same Center Stage camera/sensor combo found on the iPhone 18 Pro models that allows you to take both vertical and landscape shots no matter how you’re holding the device.
Upon unlocking the iPhone Duo from the outer display you’ll also notice that iOS 27 looks a bit different. Apple has moved both the status bar and the dock from their normal places at the top and bottom of the device, respectively, over to the right hand side. And when you open up an app, the apps menu and controls will also populate to the side rather than on the bottom. Apple says it moved these controls and elements in order to maximize vertical space for content and these changes persist when you open the iPhone Duo to its larger inner display.
Speaking of that inner 7.6-inch display, it features a nano-texture finish to fight off harsh light and reduce glare. But Apple says this finish also helps in providing a flatter look to the display. One thing lots of people don’t like about folding phones is the crease in the inner display. Apple says the nano-texture finish along with a titanium plate beneath the display minimize crease visibility while giving the inner display a sturdy, crease-less feel to the touch.
Also beneath the inner display and further maximizing screen area for content is a hidden FaceTime camera. Both the inner and outer displays also feature ProMotion, Always On, and 3000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. Plus, Apple plans to bring Apple Pencil Support to iPhone Duo through the Apple Pencil with USB-C. Apple says Apple Pencil with USB-C will be able to write an draw on both screens.
And from what Apple showed during the keynote today, the custom version of iOS 27 running on iPhone Duo is a very close cousin to iPadOS 27. You can place apps side by side in Split View, easily swap app arrangements, pair apps together, and take advantage of tablet-like layouts in the iPhone’s built-in apps, but also in apps like Netflix, Slack, and others. Plus, Apple has worked with app developers on custom layouts for iPhone Duo to enable exclusive funcationality. Apple mentioned Netflix, Teams, Zoom, and a few others during the keynote.
Cameras
The iPhone Duo pairs a 48MP main Fusion camera with a 48MP Ultra Wide Fusion camera. It’s unclear as of right now how well these will compare to the Pro models in performance, but Apple notes that the ultra wide camera is the same as the one found in the iPhone 18 Pro models.
The outer display features a Center Stage camera while the inner display features a hidden FaceTime camera. (Center Stage means its good enough for taking photos and video—which can be done while holding the phone in any orientation—while FaceTime signifies that you’ll want to limit use of that hidden camera under the inner display to FaceTime calls and not much else.)
A20 Pro Chip and Battery Life
Like the iPhone 18 Pro models, iPhone Duo will feature the A20 Pro Chip. Apple says A20 Pro features a display engine with dual display support that makes iPhone Duo’s software feats possible. And like iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Duo will also feature a vapor chamber to ensure high sustained performance. In fact, Apple says iPhone Duo boasts sustained performance that is 35% faster than iPhone 17 Pro.
iPhone Duo has a two-battery system that provides all-day battery life: roughly 24 hours per change when using both the inner and out displays equally. Wired fast charging provides a 50% charge in only 20 minutes.
Colors, Pricing, and Availability
iPhone Duo will be available in star white and night sky, starting at $1,999 for 256GB. Pre-orders begin October 16 with shipping and in-store availability set for October 23.
