Spotlight has been tucked away in the top-right corner of the screen since OS X 10.4 Tiger. In OS X Yosemite, Spotlight is now a dialog box in the center of screen.

Spotlight now is more intelligent than before and can really help you be more efficient:
  • Search news feeds, iTunes, Mac App Store, iBooks, Wikipedia, Maps, Yelp, and even perform quick unit or currency conversions with Calculator.

  • You can share your location with Spotlight to help make recommendations for local businesses, such as movie times, addresses, or even directions.
  • Searching for an application will show a list of the most recent documents related to the app.
  • Searching for a contact will show a list of related emails and reminders.
  • The Dark mode setting changes the Spotlight view.

  • Spotlight can be launched by clicking on the magnifying glass icon in the menu bar or by pressing CMD-Spacebar on a keyboard.
