OWC Brings Green Attitude to Austin Facility

OWCYou might have noticed that we here at OWC take our green initiatives pretty seriously. (Others sure have!).

From our LEED Platinum Certified headquarters to our on-site Vestas V39-500 kW wind turbine, we have made a company-wide commitment to energy conservation and environmental leadership.

And now that we’ve expanded our operation with a facility in the great city of Austin, Texas, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to also expand our environmental efforts.

OWC’s efficient new facility sits right in downtown Austin. But because we moved into an existing facility, we weren’t able to build our efforts from the ground up like we did at our Woodstock, Ill. headquarters. But we’ve taken a new approach to that “work from the ground up” philosophy: Working from the top down.

We’ve been in Austin since late 2012, and now that we’re getting the paperwork and permits approved – and the weather is cooperating – we’ve been able to break ground (well, roof actually) on the installation of solar panels for our facility.

These efficient panels harness light energy from the sun and are expected to provide no less than 32 percent of the building’s annual power consumption with excess power put out onto the grid. But it’s not just the panels that are efficient. The state-of-the-art mounts for the panels use a unique teepee shape that maximizes energy harvest by eliminating shading between module rows.

While installation is not yet complete on the project, you can check out the photos below to see our progress. And be sure to bookmark the OWC Blog for more photos and information as the project advances.
