HomeKit Details Appear On Apple Support Page

Works with Apple HomeKit badge

With only five days to go until WWDC 2015 in San Francisco, some details are beginning to emerge about how iOS devices will work with HomeKit-enabled home automation accessories. Today, the company published a support page detailing how to set up and use accessories with the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

HomeKit allows iOS devices to control accessories that bear the “Works with Apple HomeKit” badge. With those accessories, there’s a simple pairing process that takes place. The homeowner downloads the appropriate app to control the accessory, then enters a 7-digit unique code that is assigned to each accessory. This pairs the iOS device and accessory, after which Siri can be used to control the device.

The support page uses two examples of Siri control, specifically “set the temperature to 68” and “turn off the lights in the living room.” Apple does point out that Siri cannot be used to unlock doors.

As expected, the document also describes the use of a 3rd-generation or later Apple TV as a home automation hub for remotely controlling the accessories when away from home. With a newer Apple TV running software version 7.0 or later, a homeowner simply needs to use the same Apple ID to sign into the iOS device and Apple TV, after which the same Siri commands can be used from anywhere.
