Hot Read: World’s First Website Turns 25 Years Old

While it’s difficult to pin down the exact figure, most estimates put the number of websites in the world at about one billion. And it all started with a single site.

As the more recent website Engadget points out, Dec. 20 was the 25th birthday of the world’s first website: Tim Berners-Lee’s World Wide Web. The site officially went live on Dec. 20, 1990.

The page was fairly simple with an explanation of how the hypertext-based project worked, but as we know it would be the first of billions of websites to come and often go (according to The Atlantic, the average webpage lasts about 100 days).
