Celebrating The Big And Small Steps On Earth Day

GreenRainbowWe’ve talked a lot about Other World Computing’s major environmental initiatives here on the OWC Blog.

We have told you about our LEED certified corporate headquarters in Woodstock, Ill. We’ve also given you a look at our on-site Vestas V39-500 kW wind turbine (our NuGuard KX case got an even closer look at the turbine). And our more recent efforts include installing a solar panel array on the roof of our Austin facility.

These are all pretty big steps in our efforts to be as environmentally responsible and green as possible.

But not all steps need to be big to make a difference. In fact, some smaller steps can sometimes fall under the radar. And on this Earth Day we thought we would highlight one of our “smaller” steps.

OWC Margaret recently took the initiative to start a “snack garden” planted in raised beds on the perimeter of the patio to make OWC’s already green campus a little bit more so. And Margaret expects the small garden’s containers to provide healthy snacks for OWC’s all-purpose room until winter arrives.

“We will plant and hope for a bountiful harvest of cool weather crops of gourmet blend lettuce, spinach, radishes and EZ serve lettuce. These will be followed by green beans, lemon and green cucumbers, salsa and cherry size tomatoes, and hot to mild peppers,” Margaret said. “Once these are nearly done for the summer we will plant the remaining seeds from the early spring crops for the fall, starting in the shade of the summer crops.”

Margaret said she hopes that if the OWC snack garden is successful, it can be expanded for even more produce.

With the snack garden, Margaret along with the help of other OWC staffers, has proven that even smaller steps can make a difference. This earth day, make your mark. Every step helps – big or small.

  • Great article. I think we should all do our part to live a little more green regardless of how small the effort is. Anything is better then nothing.
