Have a daughter, granddaughter, niece or friend who is entering the 8th or 9th grade this fall? App Camp For Girls is now accepting applications for its 2015 events. The program is designed to teach girls how to develop iOS applications with the goal of fostering more interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers. Here’s the organization’s press release with all the details:

[] Portland, Oregon – App Camp For Girls, a non-profit organization aimed at tipping the scales of gender imbalance in software by providing girls with engaging, accessible educational programs in iOS development, is launching two new camp locations in Summer 2015. Inaugural camp sessions will be held in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Martinsville, New Jersey. Camp sessions will again take place in Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington.

“We learned a lot about what it takes to work with a remote team when we launched our first expansion location in Seattle last summer,” said Jean MacDonald, AC4G founder. “This summer, we are putting all the documentation together into a resource we call App Camp Kit, which will help us support even more new camp locations in 2016.”

The application for all four locations is now available on the App Camp For Girls website. The deadline for submitting is March 17, 2015 at midnight PDT. If applications outnumber the available spaces at any location, a random selection will be made and a waitlist will be opened. If a location is not filled by the deadline, applications will continue to be accepted until it is filled. Applications will be accepted from local area girls who will be entering 8th or 9th grade in Fall 2015. No previous programming experience is required.

Camp tuition is $375 (USD) for the week at the U.S. locations and $375 (CAD) in Vancouver. Camp session dates are as follows:

  • Vancouver, BC: July 6-10, 2015
  • Seattle, WA: July 13-17, 2015
  • Martinsville, NJ: July 20-24, 2015
  • Portland, OR (2 sessions): July 27-31 and August 17-21, 2015

At App Camp For Girls, campers receive a broad introduction to the process of iOS app development, from brainstorming and designing ideas to building and pitching their apps. The girls use Mac(R) computers and Xcode(R), Apple’s suite of developer tools, to build their apps and run them on iPod touch(R) devices. By building an app in one week, campers get a sense of accomplishment that can spark their enthusiasm to pursue further tech education.

The expansion to Vancouver marks App Camp For Girls’s first international endeavor. “It is very exciting to bring the program to Canada,” said MacDonald. “We couldn’t do it without the support from local organizations and companies, including McMillan, the BC Technology Industry Association, and Radical I/O Technology.”
