Why Waste Water?: Help Make a Difference On this World Water Day

(Photo credits: Nigol Bezjian from “Me, Water, Life” – a poetic journey into the world of Syrian refugees in Lebanon and their dire situation with water in daily life, hygiene, sewer, agriculture and more.)

Today is World Water Day. Formally proposed in 1992 and first designated in 1993, the March 22 holiday is an annual event that focuses attention on the importance of freshwater and advocates for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

The theme for 2017 World Water Day is wastewater and the campaign, “Why waste water?”, is about reducing and reusing wastewater. You can find out more about why this important theme was chosen here

Of course, World Water Day is also a wonderful reminder of those in need of clean water and provides a great opportunity to donate via organizations such as charity: water. In many developing countries, bogs and swamps are the only source of water. People spend hours lugging heavy containers of the tainted water to their villages every day. Clean drinking water is often literally under these people’s feet, but they don’t know how to find it or how to bring it up from the ground.

charity: water focuses on helping communities develop permanent water solutions such as freshwater wells, rainwater catchments and sand filters and teaching them how to maintain them.

You might remember OWC’s campaign with charity: water. About $80,000 was raised as part of OWC’s charity: water campaign. And that campaign was part of an even larger campaign called “100 Wells For The Holidays” that raised more than $1.5 million to bring sustainable drinking water solutions to people in developing nations.

Please take time today to consider what you can do to contribute on this World Water Day. For more information on World Water Day, please visit: And for information on charity: water, visit:
