Over the last several years, SSDs or Solid State Drives have become the go-to recommendation when it comes to storage. SSDs are way faster and because they have no moving parts unlike their spinning drive counterparts HDDs or Hard Disk Drives, they can be fit into a wider variety of form factors and configurations that fit every need.

But things have changed a bit due to the current shortage of flash memory affecting most of the consumer technology space right now. Because SSDs use flash memory prices have gone up quite a bit, especially in higher capacity configurations. As a result, a lot of folks are reconsidering HDDs as an alternative.

But here’s the thing, HDDs should be considered no matter if there’s a flash memory shortage or not. That’s because they deliver capable performance and high capacities and at a much lower cost than SSDs.
